‘Dream Team’ set to inspire next generation

By Wright Communications

Luminaries such as the Governor-General Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, actor Miriama Smith, business legend Sir Stephen Tindall, and sporting great Beatrice Faumuina will join Kiwi scientists, entrepreneurs, adventurers, CEOs, politicians and community champions as Dream Team volunteers nationwide.

The full team announcement will be made on Sunday. Their destinations include primary, intermediate and secondary schools, Manukau Institute of Technology, and a teen parenting unit.

The Dream Team will have 'dream cards' to share with the students, and the Trust is developing online action plan resources which older students can use to help convert their dreams into action.

The Dream Team project is being championed by Mark Weldon, a former Olympic swimmer and former CEO of NZX who was named a Blake Emerging Leader in 2005, and Heather Te Au Skipworth, founder of Iron Maori and 2011 Emerging Leader.

Mark Weldon says the Blake Leaders came up with the Dream Team idea as a way of inspiring the next generation: "It is all about encouraging our kids to have dreams and aspirations, and to have the courage to pursue them."

"There is something special about taking part in an event being held simultaneously right around the country. I can't wait to start speaking at 11am on the 26th and know that so many inspirational leaders will be doing exactly the same thing."

Heather Te Au Skipworth says Sir Peter Blake was a perfect example of someone who single-mindedly took action to achieve his dreams.

"The Dream Team is a chance for us to talk to children about the dreams we had growing up, and what we did to help make them happen. We want to spark inspirational conversation."

She says the response from people who heard about the initiative has been amazing, with the email invitation 'going viral' among leadership networks and boosting the team to more than double the original target.

"It is fantastic to have so many people willing to give up their time to make a difference," says Heather Te Au Skipworth, who will visit Hastings Intermediate.

Leadership Week (25-29 June) ends with Red Socks Day.
